How to Make Your Flower Arrangement Last Longer

How to Make Your Flower Arrangement Last Longer

There’s nothing quite like fresh flowers to brighten up a room—whether it’s a bouquet from a loved one, a surprise delivery, or something you treated yourself to (we’re big fans of that). At Saville’s Florist, we want your blooms to bring joy for as long as possible, so we’re sharing our top insider tips for keeping your flowers fresh, vibrant, and beautiful.

Here’s how to get the most out of your arrangement:

1. Start with a Clean Vase

If you’re transferring your bouquet to a different vase, make sure it’s squeaky clean! Bacteria is the #1 enemy of fresh flowers. Wash your vase with warm water and dish soap, and rinse thoroughly before adding fresh water.

2. Change the Water Every 1–2 Days

Fresh, cool water is key. Every couple of days, empty the vase, rinse it, and refill it with clean water. This helps prevent bacteria from forming and keeps your flowers hydrated.

3. Trim the Stems on an Angle

Use sharp scissors or floral shears to cut about ½ inch off the stems at a 45° angle. Do this every time you change the water. Cutting at an angle helps the stems absorb more water and more water means happier flowers.

4. Keep Them Out of Direct Sunlight & Heat

As pretty as they look on a sunny windowsill, flowers last longer in cooler, indirect light. Avoid placing your arrangement near radiators, heat vents, or appliances that give off warmth.

6. Keep Fruit Bowls at a Distance

We know it sounds odd, but fruit (especially bananas and apples) releases ethylene gas, which speeds up the aging of your flowers. Keep arrangements away from ripening fruit!

7. Remove Wilting Flowers Promptly

As soon as a flower starts to wilt, remove it from the arrangement. This prevents the decay from spreading and helps the remaining blooms last longer.

Bonus Tip: Ask Us!

If you ever have a question about how to care for a specific flower or type of arrangement, just give us a call or stop in. We’re always happy to help make your flowers last and bring more beauty to your day.
